What This Converter Does
Area shows up at wildly different scales depending on what you're measuring — a room in square feet, a farm in acres or hectares, a country in square kilometers — and none of those scale factors are obvious from memory. This tool takes an area value in one unit and converts it to another, covering everything from small indoor spaces up to land-scale measurements.
How to Use It
Enter a Value, choose a From Unit and To Unit, and click Convert. The seven supported units are square meters, square kilometers, square feet, square yards, square miles, acres, and hectares, covering both small-scale metric/imperial units and the two units most commonly used for land area specifically.
The Formula
Square meters are the common base. Square kilometers convert by multiplying by 1 million, square feet by 0.092903, square yards by 0.836127, square miles by 2.59 million, acres by 4046.86, and hectares by a clean 10,000. Converting between any two units passes your input through square meters first, then divides by the target unit's own factor, rounded to 5 decimal places.
A Worked Example
500 square meters converts to 5,381.95753 square feet — 500 ÷ 0.092903, dividing by the square foot's own factor since you're converting out of the base unit. Land-scale units show an interesting quirk: converting 1 acre gives 43,560.05726 square feet, extremely close to — but not perfectly matching — the textbook figure of exactly 43,560 square feet per acre. That tiny 0.06 sqft gap comes from the acre and square-foot conversion factors themselves being stored as rounded decimals (4046.86 and 0.092903) rather than their full, unrounded values, and it compounds very slightly when you convert through both of them in sequence.
How to Convert Area Manually
Route everything through square meters. To convert a unit to square meters, multiply by its own factor — 1 hectare × 10,000 = 10,000 square meters, a clean, easy one to do in your head. To go the other way, divide by that factor instead — 500 square meters ÷ 0.092903 = 5,381.95753 square feet. When converting between two non-metric units, like acres to square yards, convert to square meters first as a stepping stone rather than trying to find or derive a direct factor between the two.
