Tip Calculator

Calculate tip amount, total bill, and how to split it among multiple people.

Enter bill details to calculate tip.

What This Calculator Does

Splitting a dinner bill in your head gets error-prone fast, especially once a tip percentage and an odd number of people are both in the mix. This calculator takes your bill total, a tip percentage, and the number of people sharing the check, and returns the tip amount, the grand total, and — when more than one person is splitting — exactly how much each person owes, tip included.

How to Use It

Enter the Bill Amount, choose a Tip Percentage, and set Number of People to however many are splitting the check (it defaults to 1 for a single payer). The result always shows the Bill Amount, the tip in dollars, and the Total Bill with tip included; once you set Number of People above 1, an extra section appears showing the Tip per Person and Total per Person, so everyone at the table knows their exact share.

The Formula

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100), and Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount. When splitting, both the total and the tip are divided evenly by Number of People — Total per Person = Total Amount ÷ Number of People, and Tip per Person = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People — so every person's share reflects an equal split of both the meal cost and the tip, not just the meal cost alone.

A Worked Example

A $50.00 bill with a 20% tip, split four ways: the tip comes to $50.00 × 0.20 = $10.00, bringing the total to $60.00. Divide that total by 4 people and each person owes $15.00, of which $2.50 is their individual share of the tip. In the US, 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is a commonly used range for a tip — this example sits at the higher end of that range, but the same formulas apply at any percentage you enter.
