Length Converter
Convert various units of length (e.g., meters, feet, miles).
Enter values and units to convert length.
What This Converter Does
Distances get quoted in whatever unit the source happens to use — a recipe box in centimeters, a road sign in miles, a spec sheet in millimeters — and comparing them means getting everything onto the same scale first. Enter a value in any supported length unit, pick where you're converting from and to, and this tool handles the arithmetic instantly.
How to Use It
Enter a Value, choose a From Unit, and choose a To Unit, then hit Convert. The eight supported units are millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, and miles — everyday metric and imperial units, but no specialized ones like nautical miles. The result is stated as a full sentence ("X [unit] is Y [unit]"), which makes it easy to copy the whole line somewhere else without having to reassemble it from separate numbers.
The Formula
Every unit converts through meters as a common base. Each unit has its own fixed factor for turning a value into meters: millimeters ÷ 1000, centimeters ÷ 100, kilometers × 1000, inches × 0.0254, feet × 0.3048, yards × 0.9144, and miles × 1609.34 (meters itself needs no conversion). To convert between any two units, the calculator converts your input into meters first, then divides by the target unit's own meters-per-unit factor to land on the final figure, rounded to 5 decimal places.
A Worked Example
100 meters converts to 328.08399 feet: divide 100 by the foot's conversion factor of 0.3048, since a value already in the base unit (meters) just needs dividing by the target unit's own factor. The same 100 meters converts to 3,937.00787 inches, dividing instead by the inch's factor of 0.0254 — a much larger number, since an inch is a much smaller unit than a foot. For a quick mental-math anchor, 1 meter alone is 3.28084 feet, which is exactly what you'd get scaling the 100-meter result down by a factor of 100.
How to Convert Length Manually
Multiply or divide by the fixed factor between the two units, going through meters if you don't know the direct factor. To go from meters to feet, divide by 0.3048 (since 1 foot = 0.3048 meters) — 100 ÷ 0.3048 = 328.08399. To go the other way, from feet to meters, multiply by 0.3048 instead. If you're converting between two non-metric, non-meter units, like inches to yards, it's usually easiest to convert to meters first as a stepping stone, then convert from meters to your actual target unit, rather than hunting for a direct inches-to-yards factor.
