What This Converter Does

A kitchen scale reads grams, a bathroom scale reads pounds, and a nutrition label splits the difference — mass shows up in whatever unit suits the context, and this tool moves a value between them without you needing to remember any conversion factors yourself. Enter an amount, choose the unit it's currently in and the unit you want it in, and the converted figure comes back immediately.

How to Use It

Enter a Value and pick a From Unit and To Unit from the dropdowns, then click Convert. The seven supported units are milligrams, grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, stones, and metric tons (tonnes) — notably, this converter doesn't include US (short) tons, so if you need those, you'll want a different tool. The result reads back as a full sentence naming both units, so it's unambiguous which number belongs to which unit even out of context.

The Formula

Kilograms serve as the common base unit here. Milligrams convert to kilograms by dividing by 1,000,000, grams by dividing by 1,000, ounces by multiplying by 0.0283495, pounds by multiplying by 0.453592, stones by multiplying by 6.35029 (1 stone = 14 lb), and metric tons by multiplying by 1,000 (1 tonne = 1,000 kg, kilograms themselves need no adjustment). A conversion between any two units first turns your input into kilograms using its own factor, then divides by the target unit's factor to arrive at the final number, rounded to 5 decimal places.

A Worked Example

150 grams of an ingredient converts to 5.2911 ounces: first 150 grams becomes 0.15 kilograms (150 ÷ 1,000), then 0.15 ÷ 0.0283495 (the ounce's own factor) gives 5.2911. For a cleaner round-number case, 5 kilograms converts to 11.02312 pounds — 5 ÷ 0.453592 — which is close to, but not exactly, the "roughly 11 pounds" shortcut a lot of people use for quick mental math. At the other end of the scale, 1 metric ton converts to 2,204.62442 pounds: 1 × 1,000 gives 1,000 kilograms, then 1,000 ÷ 0.453592 (the pound's factor) gives the final result.

For stones: 1 stone converts to exactly 14 pounds — 6.35029 ÷ 0.453592 — matching the common everyday "1 stone = 14 lb" fact exactly, not just approximately, since both factors were chosen so that relationship holds cleanly.

How to Convert Mass Manually

Route your conversion through kilograms if you don't have a direct factor memorized. Grams to kilograms is a straight division by 1,000 (150g ÷ 1,000 = 0.15kg); kilograms to pounds is a division by 0.453592 (0.15 ÷ 0.453592 ≈ 0.33069 lb). Going the other direction — from a larger, more "human" unit down to a smaller one — flips to multiplication instead of division: pounds to kilograms multiplies by 0.453592, not divides by it. If you're ever unsure which direction to go, check that your answer makes physical sense: converting to a smaller unit should always give you a bigger number, never a smaller one.
